I have a criminal record that I want to go away, what should I do?
A record suspension is something that allows people who were convicted of a criminal offence but have completed their sentence and demonstrated that they are law-abiding citizens for a certain number of years, to have their criminal record kept separate and apart from other criminal records. Basically, it means that when someone does a search for you in the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) database, the criminal record won’t show up.
How can I have my criminal record removed with a record suspension?
- Contact the John Howard Society, they have two people that will help you, for free, to get a record suspension. Find out more about the John Howard Society, like contact information, and how to get started.
- You get a record suspension on your own but it can be very complicated. You can also pay someone to tell you all of the steps required (they won’t actually do it for you but will tell you the steps you need to follow).
