How do I get money if I can’t work right now?
There are funds available to support people in Ontario who are not currently working. These come through Ontario Works (OW), Employment Insurance (EI), or the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP). If you have a child and are in care, talk to your worker about your situation as there may be more options for you.
If you are receiving money through a Ready, Set, Go! arrangement and want to access either OW or ODSP when you end that agreement (for example, after your 23rd birthday), you’ll need to plan ahead in two ways:
- Money comes from CAS at the beginning of the month, ODSP and OW pay at the end of the month. That means that when you switch from CAS to ODSP or OW, there will be 2 months between payments – make sure that you have a plan to make it through those 2 months financially.
- Make sure that you stop financial supports from CAS before you apply for either ODSP or OW. If you “double dip” you will have to pay back the money. Let your worker know that you have approval for ODSP or OW and then they will end your payments.

How do I apply for the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP)?
- If you want to apply for ODSP, you’ll need documentation in hand that shows that you have a diagnosed disability.
- Usually, if you’re eligible for ODSP, your worker will apply for you at least 6 months before you turn 18. They will complete an application online, gather all the documents that are needed, and make an appointment to meet with the ODSP office. This meeting will be for you to attend, but it’s a good idea for you to bring a support person with you, if you need help finding someone send an email here and let us know.
