How do I find housing?
Market rent means the amount of money that rentals usually cost in a city. You can find a rental that is at market rent, which means the usual price of rent, or you use the services on this page to try to find housing that will be cheaper than market rent.
How do I find housing if I can’t pay market rent?
- You’ll want to get on the Housing Registry. This is a service that helps people apply for subsidized housing, which means an apartment that is cheaper than market rent. The steps you need to take to sign up for the Housing Registry might be a little bit complicated, so contact us if you need help.
- To get started:
- If you have a worker at CAS, you will start by asking them to help you fill out a form called a SPDAT. This will get you signed up at the Housing Registry.
- If you don’t have a worker at CAS, call 211 and let them know that you want to access the Housing Registry and need someone, like a Housing Worker, who can help you fill out an SPDAT form. You can also contact Operation Come Home (OCH) or Youth Services Bureau (YSB) and ask if there is someone there that can help you fill out a SPDAT.
- If you are Indigenous, you can contact Wabano and they will be able to put you in touch with a Housing Worker.
- If you are Inuit, you can contact Tungasuvvingat Inuit and they will put you in touch with a Housing Worker.
- Once you’re on the Housing Registry, you’ll need to update your application every year, even if you’re already in a subsidized apartment. You’ll also need to provide them a “Notice of Assessment” which you get when you file your taxes. Find out more about how to file your taxes or get help filing them.
